Legislative Preview: 90 Days in Annapolis

The New Year brings a new start, a new baby loggerhead sea turtle to the Aquarium and a new legislative session in Annapolis!

Published January 13, 2016

Over 1,600 bills are already in the drafting process or have been introduced to date—suggesting a busy and interesting 90 days ahead. The major issues to watch include a battle over budget priorities, an effort to overturn a number of gubernatorial vetoes and a special concentration on strengthening Baltimore City.

The Aquarium had a productive 2015 legislatives session! Highlights include:

  • Securing $474,601 in Operating Budget funding to support the Aquarium’s free education program for Maryland schools.
  • Helping to pass legislation outlawing the sale of microbeads in Maryland.
  • As with every new session, the National Aquarium’s Government Affairs team will keep a watchful eye on the Budget and conservation bills related to water, animals, and the world’s aquatic treasures. Look for more information on the Community Cleanup and Greening Act of 2016 and the Aquarium’s efforts to secure education funding in the weeks ahead.
