Baltimore (July 5, 2007) - The National Aquarium in Baltimore's award-winning Aquarium on Wheels (AOW) program will take its student-produced play, Super Terp to the Rescue, to libraries city-wide this July and August.
This year, the program's student-written play features a diamondback terrapin, Maryland's state reptile, as the protagonist and Pollution as the adversary of sea life. Other characters include animals found in the Chesapeake Bay, acquainting kids with creatures found near their own backyards.
The Aquarium on Wheels program is staffed by Baltimore City and County high school students who use theater to learn and teach about science, conservation and marine biology. With the supervision of Aquarium staff, students write, produce and perform plays with a conservation message to audiences at Enoch Pratt Libraries in the City.
In addition to producing and presenting plays, the students work at information carts throughout the Aquarium, and they also bring animals to the library programs and share information about some of the remarkable local wildlife featured in the play. The program is designed to introduce teenagers to the worlds of science, performing arts, marine biology and environmental conservation, instilling a lifelong interest.
Students are paid an hourly stipend which eliminates economic barriers and encourages underprivileged youth to apply for the program. Aquarium on Wheels has earned national recognition as a recipient of the 2004 Coming Up Taller Award, presented by the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.
