Interns assist the Communications staff with the written and/or design content of Aquarium publications.
Essential Functions:
Writing Path
The selected Publications intern(s) on the writing path write, edit, proofread, and repurpose content for printed and online publications.
- Edits and proofreads brochures, mailers, invitations, booklets, inserts, coupons, etc. for grammar and style
- Writes and/or repurposes content for various print publications and web site, generally completing stories for the members' magazine Watermarks
- Works closely with Aquarium staff, gathering story ideas, interviewing, and fact checking
- Assists with administrative tasks, mailings etc.
- Provides help with the Aquarium's sample archive
- Joins the Communications team for meetings and special events
- Completes special projects and/or reports when assigned
Specific Requirements for Writing Path:
- Undergraduate students pursuing a degree in English, communications, journalism, publishing, or a related field.
- Must have excellent writing/editing skills
- Knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style is helpful.
- Send a writing sample of at least 200 words.
Design Path
The selected Publications intern(s) on the design path assist with the design and execution of a range of printed materials.
- Executes the design of print publications, including ads, coupons, flyers, newsletters, etc.
- Assists in concept development and arrives at creative solutions that meet the Aquarium's brand standards and guidelines
- Responds to general daily client requests - such as locating and resizing images - in a timely manner
- Gathers pricing and prepares files for print
- Assists with administrative tasks, mailings, etc.
- Provides help with the Aquarium's sample archive and with key-wording images
- Joins the Communications team for meetings and special events
- Completes special projects when assigned
Specific Requirements for Graphic Design Path:
- Undergraduate students pursuing a degree in graphic design or related field from an accredited college or university
- Working knowledge of Photoshop CS2, InDesign CS2, and Illustrator CS2.
- Must be proficient with the Macintosh platform.
- Send two-three samples of work or a link to an online portfolio
Publications Requirements:
- Must be able to operate within Microsoft Office systems.
- Must be self-motivated and have sharp attention to detail, ability to work independently or as part of a team, flexible personality, sense of humor, creativity, and the ability to manage multiple projects.
- Must complete a minimum of 120 hours of work within the selected term.
- A biological background is helpful, but not required.
- Preference is given to juniors and seniors.
