Wash, DCHerpetology
Herpetology interns assist the Aquarium herpetology staff with daily care of the Aquarium's reptiles, amphibians, and associated invertebrates.
Essential Functions
- Prepare diets for and feed the reptiles and amphibians
- Mist, clean, and otherwise help tend the reptiles and amphibians
- Change exhibit water and clean filters in order to maintain the highest water quality possible for the animals
- Assist in the maintenance of the live food cultures (e.g., fruit flies, springtails)
- Conduct and record animal observations
- Perform special projects as determined by the herpetology staff
- Observe medical procedures on collection animals.
Requirements
- Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college, pursuing a degree in biology, zoology, animal behavior, ecology, environmental science, or a related field
- Must complete a minimum of 120 hours of work within the selected term
- Must be comfortable working with frogs, lizards, fish, rodents, crickets, and other terrestrial arthropods.
