June 19, 2006 - Aquarium Staff to Build Toys - For Fun and Learning - For Animals June 20

Discover How Staff Build a Kelp Forest From Car Wash Strips or Slow-Release Food Containers for Fish from Film Canisters

What:
Media are invited to join the Aquarium for Animal Enrichment Building Day, when Aquarium staff and volunteers build a variety of stimulating toys, hiding places and feeders made from everyday materials for the Aquarium’s 16,000 animals.

Our animal enrichment committee constantly brainstorms new feeding methods, activities, environments and interactions for the Aquarium’s animals. Staff build new feeding devices, such as slow-release shrimp feeders, and hiding places for fishes. The dolphins may get new “kelp forests” to swim through and the Rain Forest birds are offered new items to pull apart.

Enrichment provides variety in the animals’ environments. Animal care staff may change the environment by creating new hiding places for animals, changing water currents, simulating sunrise/sunset and adding new activities for the animals.
