The National Aquarium Celebrates 33 Years and the First Anniversary of Blacktip Reef

7/24/2014

On August 8, 2014, the National Aquarium will celebrate its 33rd birthday and the first anniversary of the Blacktip Reef exhibit! In honor of these milestones, the National Aquarium will offer guests a series of fun-filled activities.

During the week of August 4, guests are invited to enjoy daily talks with aquarists and themed animal encounters that celebrate the exhibit’s anniversary and the Aquarium’s birthday, both of which fall on the same day. Then, on August 8, the first 500 guests to enter the building will receive a free slice of cake. SpongeBob Squarepants will also make a special visit to the National Aquarium on August 9 and 10 to continue the celebrations throughout the weekend.

Blacktip Reef-themed hotel packages are available at several hotels throughout the area including the Four Seasons and Hotel Monaco and, during the month of August, guests will receive a special insiders guide to Blacktip Reef.

SpongeBob Squarepants will join the celebration on August 9 and 10 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. SpongeBob will be handing out special Nickelodeon cards and will be available for photos with guests. Visitors can also enjoy the aquarium’s featured 4-D immersion film “SpongeBob Squarepants 4-D: The Great Jelly Rescue.”

Since opening, Blacktip Reef has become home to 779 animals, representing 70 different species including blacktip reef sharks, clown triggerfish, tasseled wobbegongs, humphead wrasse, stingrays, a green sea turtle and more. The 270,000-gallon exhibit replicates Indo-Pacific reefs and offers an up close and unique way to experience an environment of sharks and an endangered coral ecosystem without traveling thousands of miles or getting wet.
