Jennifer Dittmar

Jennifer DittmarAs a leader on our National Aquarium Animal Rescue team, from traveling up and down the Atlantic coast for stranding events to managing animal feeding schedules for our volunteers. When we have rescue animals in our rehabilitation center, I work closely with our team to treat and monitor the health of each animal. In my spare time, my job requires grant writing, data and research collection, budgeting, long-term planning and much more!

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Ever since my first trip to the beach when I was 5, I knew I wanted to work somewhere that involved marine animals. I briefly diverted from this when I entered school to be a pharmacist, but my instincts drew me right back to the marine science field.

What did you study in school?
Environmental Science and Biology.

How did you get started in your field of work?
I worked teaching marine science at a field station right out of college, and met the then manager of the Animal Rescue Program. I knew immediately that I wanted to get involved, so he invited me to become a volunteer with the program. I packed up and moved to Baltimore to become a full-time volunteer three days a week, and worked as many part-time jobs as I needed to pay my bills. My hard work paid off 10 months later, when I became an official full-time staff member with the program, and have been moving up since then.

At the Aquarium

How long have you been at the Aquarium?
Since 2004.

I love what I do because...
No one day is the same, and I love being able to give hope to protected and endangered species.

Most memorable moment at the Aquarium
The day I went from a volunteer to a paid staff member!

If you could have any other job at the Aquarium for one day, what job would it be and why?
A photographer! I would love to spend a day photographing all the diverse jobs and animals that the Aquarium has to offer.

Fun Facts

Williamsport, PA. Home of the Little League World Series!

Favorite Animal:
Manatees. My first marine encounter was with a manatee in its natural environment in Florida… I’ve been hooked ever since. Goats are a close second!

Three (OK - four!) things you never leave home without?

  • Chapstick
  • A reusable bag
  • My library card
  • Cell phone

If you could have lunch with anyone (alive or dead), who would it be?
I guess I would have to say the cast from the 2001-2002 season of Saturday Night Live.

One lesson you wish you'd learned earlier in life?
Not to stress about events that are beyond on your control.
