Conservation Initiatives

Cove Point

In 2011, the National Aquarium Conservation Team (ACT!) partnered with Dominion Energy, Maryland Conservation Corps, and local citizens to restore wetland habitat along the Chesapeake Bay at Cove Point, in Lusby, Maryland.

The American beachgrass and wetland grasses planted by several hundred local students and volunteers is already showing great progress! Despite a harsh winter and several large storms, the grasses are holding strong and will continue to grow larger and greener. As they grow, their roots will work to stabilize the new shoreline, which was created from the beneficial use of dredge material.

We are continuing to restore and monitor the site with the help of students in our Wetland Nursery Program. Local students are raising native marsh grasses on their school grounds and will use those plant additional areas of the marsh.
