Aquarium Welcomes New Director of Government Relations

The National Aquarium is pleased to announce the hiring of Mark Yost, Jr. as the new Director of Government Relations.

As Director of Government Relations, Yost will expand the National Aquarium’s profile before governmental leaders and advocate for the Aquarium before State and local governments.

“Yost brings a wealth of experience to the position and to the organization, lobbying at both the state and federal level,” said Kathy Sher, Senior Director of External Affairs for the National Aquarium. “His areas of expertise in policy are extremely diverse and his relationships with those in the community will certainly be an asset.”

Yost comes to the National Aquarium from Erickson Retirement Communities where he was the Senior Manager of Government and Regulatory Affairs and prior to that the Government & Regulatory Affairs Manager. During his time at Erickson, he focused his efforts on multi-state legislative lobbying and in federal advocacy. He drafted legislation and amendments; built and maintained relationships with political contacts, trade associations and other business entities; and developed and retained expertise in areas including senior living, real estate development, health care, insurance and employment.

Prior to working for Erickson, Yost worked on staff in the Maryland General Assembly as the legislative director for State Senator Kathy Klausmeier. During the two years he spent with Sen. Klausmeier, Yost worked to achieve the Senator’s legislative agenda. He drafted legislation, amendments, press releases and public statements; managed the day-to-day operations of the legislative office; and represented the Senator at events and meetings.

Yost has a Bachelor of Science, Magna Cum Laude, in Political Science from Towson University. He attended Theological Studies at St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore, Maryland. He received a Master of Public Policy from American University in Washington, DC and is currently studying for his Juris Doctor at University of Maryland School of Law.

Active in the Baltimore community, Yost currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Maryland Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. Through a social club he founded, Yost also engages in fundraising efforts for local charities including AIDS Action Baltimore, the GLCCB and Moveable Feast. He is also quite active in Baltimore’s political scene, volunteering and providing advice on numerous political and issue campaigns. Yost resides in Mt. Vernon in Baltimore City.
