National Aquarium to Hold Annual Maryland Dolphin Count

The public is invited to join the National Aquarium’s Animal Rescue staff for the Annual Maryland Dolphin Count along the Atlantic coast of Maryland on Friday, July 20. Staff and volunteers will help record dolphin sightings to help determine the state’s dolphin population from 9am-11am at two established beach locations. The Aquarium will also enlist the help of the Ocean City Station of the United States Coast Guard.

Annual dolphin counts help marine mammal specialists capture a snapshot look at dolphin populations, reproduction rates and ocean health. Looking at the population numbers over the years can help to determine the health of the coastal ecosystem as well as the abundance of prey.
