The National Aquarium is pleased to announce the promotion of Dr. Lori Westmoreland from Associate Veterinarian to Director of Animal Health and Welfare, effective immediately.

In her new role, Westmoreland is responsible for the administration and management of Animal Health, Marine Mammals, Animal Rescue and Animal Programs. "I am happy to take on a larger role here at the Aquarium," said Dr. Lori Westmoreland. "This position will allow me to continue working with the Aquarium's many animals, as well as lead a team of passionate professionals who are all working toward the same goal of providing only the highest level of care to our animals."

"Dr. Westmoreland's expertise in animal care and welfare, as well as her already established strong relationships with teams across the Aquarium make her the ideal choice and will ensure smooth operations throughout," said Chief Operating Officer Dale Schmidt. "Her collaborative nature and calm, positive demeanor will continue to make a positive impact on the animals in our care and the teams that serve the Aquarium everyday."

Westmoreland received her DVM from North Carolina State University, College of Veterinary Medicine in 2014 and she began her career as an Animal Health Intern here at the National Aquarium. Later, she went on to complete her Residency in Zoological Medicine with a focus in aquatics at North Carolina State University in 2018. Westmoreland returned to the Aquarium as Associate Veterinarian in 2018.
