National Ocean Exploration Forum

Characterizing the Unknown: A National Ocean Exploration Forum 2015 will be the third in a series of annual symposia focused on establishing a formal, dedicated national strategy and program of ocean exploration as called for in the statute authorizing NOAA’s ocean exploration program. Ocean Exploration 2020: A National Forum, held in July 2013 at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California, provided an opportunity for participants to describe elements a successful national ocean exploration program should exhibit by the year 2020. A second, more focused forum, held in September 2014 at the National Aquarium, focused on how we can more comprehensively address national ocean exploration needs. The 2014 meeting provided an opportunity to review progress since 2013 and identify and recommend topics for the national forum in 2015.

The 2015 national forum will challenge participants to describe the requirements of a first-order baseline characterization that could set a new standard for exploring unknown ocean areas and phenomena. Specifically, the forum will provide an opportunity for participants to describe how they are currently exploring the marine environment and share plans and ideas on upcoming ocean exploration expeditions. Discussion will revolve around the integration of multiple observation platforms, technologies and tools into a more comprehensive, effective and efficient national capacity. This event will serve to not only stimulate conversation around further establishing baselines, but also provide incentives to build on existing partnerships—and establish new ones—to accelerate the pace of ocean exploration. Furthermore, this will enable participants to mark progress on the recommendations resulting from the previous forums.

Room blocks have been set aside for forum attendees.
