Raymond retires to Florida

Published November 22, 2010

Raymond the pygmy marmoset was born at the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Tacoma, Washington, 13 years ago. He traveled first to the Cleveland Zoo and then came to Baltimore, where he has lived in the Amazon River Forest for the past five years.

With the passing of his companion, Ralphie, nearly a year and a half ago, our Rain Forest staff immediately began a search to find Raymond another suitable companion.  Unfortunately, that search was unsuccessful, so we began to think about moving Raymond to a new home.

We located a population of pygmy marmosets at the Rare Species Conservatory Foundation (RSCF) in southern Florida, and have made the decision to retire Raymond with them. He will reside with his own little group of "Golden Girls" in the southern Florida sun and under the watchful eye of Dr. Paul Reillo and the other animal care staff at the Foundation.

With the help of RSCF, it is our hope to repopulate the Amazon River Forest with a thriving group of pygmy marmosets at some point in the future. Please wish Raymond a safe trip as he embarks on what will no doubt be a remarkable chapter in his life’s journey!
