In celebration of Blacktip Reef’s first anniversary, we’re highlighting some of the awesome animals that call our newest exhibit home!
Calypso, our 500-pound, green sea turtle, was the first to take a dip in the 270,000-gallon coral reef when it opened last August.
A much-loved member of the Aquarium family, Calypso arrived here in 2002, after being rescued by the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation. Weighing just six pounds, she was found cold stunned on the beach with an infected left front flipper which was later amputated to save her life.
Calypso quickly settled in to her new home in Blacktip Reef and has already adopted a few favorite spots to take an afternoon nap.
Check back all week as we continue to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Blacktip Reef!
