Animal Update: Brownie's Journey

We’re happy to share that our loggerhead turtle, Brownie, was released earlier this month!

Brownie is part of the Loggerhead Turtle Head Start Program. Run by the North Carolina Aquarium, this program aims to give endangered sea turtles a better chance at survival in the wild. Loggerhead hatchlings are brought to aquariums where they can safely grow, then later released back to the ocean.

The National Aquarium has participated in the head start program since 2004. Hatchlings are picked up in North Carolina and brought to the Aquarium where their health and growth can be carefully monitored. The baby loggerheads spend some time on exhibit, and once healthy and large enough, return to North Carolina for release.

Loggerhead Sea Turtle

Brownie arrived at the National Aquarium as a hatchling about two years ago. Earlier this month, the loggerhead made the trek back to North Carolina with our team. Before release, Brownie was outfitted with a satellite tag, so scientists can continue to track his movement in the wild.

The National Aquarium team returned from North Carolina with a new turtle hatchling. The young turtle will remain behind-the-scenes, closely monitored by our team, until it’s ready to be moved to our Maryland: Mountains to the Sea exhibit in December.

Stay tuned for future updates on our new loggerhead charge!
