Animal Rescue Update: Blade’s Return

Published October 09, 2014

The long-awaited journey back to the ocean has become reality for National Aquarium Animal Rescue patient #1337, Blade.

It has been a long and trying 10 months of intense rehabilitation for this Kemp’s ridley, but yesterday his story came full circle.  Staff and volunteers headed down to Ocean City, Maryland to see Blade, and 3 fellow rehabilitated turtles from the New England Aquarium, off to new adventures out in the big blue!  After almost a year with us, Blade’s release was so very rewarding for our team.

As you may recall, it was not long ago that we were carefully treating Blade with an aggressive antibiotic routine for sepsis, and employing physical therapy to help with his shoulder joints.

Blade made a fantastic turnaround and started eating on his own, using those flippers, and becoming more feisty with every check-up with our Animal Health team.  Since his entrance examination in December 2013, Blade gained 4 lbs., and was eating approximately 1 lb. of seafood a week!

Yesterday, Blade definitely made us all proud as he took off for his home without looking back at all.  We have every confidence that he will do fantastic in the wild.  Before his release, Blade was outfitted with a satellite tag. Our team (and the public!) will soon be able to watch his journey south for the winter!

With Blade successfully released, our team’s attention will continue to be focused on our remaining patient, Cougar. Cougar is still receiving weekly shell cleanings and is actively fighting an infection that has slowed the healing of his carapace.  Veterinarians have started him on a regimen of antibiotics. We’re excited to report that he is still eating like a champ!

Stay tuned for more updates on Cougar!
