A wetland is an area of land that is saturated with water, either permanently or seasonally, making it a distinct ecosystem. Wetlands can be found on every continent except Antarctica and come in many forms—including marshes, bogs and swamps.
Wetlands serve important environmental functions, such as protecting shorelines from storms, helping to control flooding and even purifying water. They also provide a unique habitat where plants and animals thrive.

Due to the many benefits wetland environments provide for ecosystems, leaders in many urban areas have started to invest in them. In Baltimore, the Aquarium announced plans to expand our very own urban wetland footprint! After years of success with our floating wetlands project, we want to infuse even more nature into our urban environment, while also helping improve the Inner Harbor’s water quality. In addition to reintroducing wetland habitats for native species, these green spaces will provide local students with a living classroom!
