Animal Rescue Update: Sea Turtle Release

Our Animal Rescue team has released 19 rehabilitated sea turtles off the coast of Florida!

Published January 27, 2017

Working in tandem with the National Marine Life Center and the Pittsburgh Zoo, the Aquarium’s staff traveled to Anastasia State Park in St. Augustine, Florida, for the first release of the year! Six of the 19 turtles released were cared for at the Aquarium.sea-turtle-release-shoreline

Of the six released, four were green sea turtles and two were Kemp’s ridley turtles. All of our turtle patients this season were named after characters from the Harry Potter series, so there were some famous names in the bunch! Dumbledore, number 24, and Grawp, number 28, were among the turtles released. aquarium-staff-and-turtle

These six were the first of our 21 sea turtle patients to be cleared for release this year. We still have 15 sea turtles in our care and will continue to treat them for cold-stunning and other conditions. They will reside at the Aquarium until they too are ready for release!

Stay tuned for more updates!
